KNCHR Urges Protest Victims to File Claims Before Deadline

Victims of recent demonstrations have been given just one week to report human rights violations for possible compensation, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has announced. The appeal targets individuals injured during protests, as well as families who lost loved ones, ahead of the April 3, 2026 deadline.

According to KNCHR chairperson Claris Ogangah, the commission is in the final stages of preparing a national framework for compensation and reparations. She described the remaining days of the 60-day reporting window as critical for capturing all legitimate claims, noting that the process is now at an advanced stage. The initiative is anchored in the commission’s constitutional mandate, supported by a Gazette Notice, a court ruling, and a Presidential Proclamation directing KNCHR to submit the plan within the set timeline.

Ogangah emphasized that KNCHR remains the only institution authorised to receive and document cases linked to protest-related violations for compensation purposes. Victims were urged to submit supporting documents such as medical reports, P3 forms, police OB numbers, and post-mortem reports where applicable.
