The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the County Government of Kisii and development partners, today marked National Jigger Awareness Day in Kisii County.
The event aimed to highlight the impact of jigger infestations and promote hygiene as a key strategy in eradicating the condition.
As part of the event, officials launched the “Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani” initiative, which focuses on encouraging clean living environments, providing essential resources such as footwear and sanitation kits, and educating communities on jigger awareness and prevention.
Speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary, Head of Environmental Health, Mr. Anthony Wainaina, underscored the serious public health consequences of jiggers, particularly in rural areas.
He noted that infestations cause immense suffering, disability, and social stigma, making intervention a national priority.
“Through collaboration and improved hygiene practices, we can eliminate jigger infestations and safeguard the health of our communities,” said Mr. Wainaina.
He further called on all Kenyans to prioritize personal and environmental hygiene as a fundamental step toward a jigger-free Kenya.
The event was attended by key government officials, including Kisii County Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Kibet, and Deputy Governor, Hon. Elijah Obebo, who reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working with stakeholders in the fight against jiggers.
With renewed focus and strategic partnerships, the government and development agencies are optimistic that continued jigger awareness and hygiene initiatives will significantly reduce jigger cases in affected regions.
