Intra-African TradeDeputy President Kithure Kindiki has called for faster harmonisation of quality standards across Africa to strengthen intra-African trade and accelerate the continent’s economic transformation.
Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Kindiki, representing President William Ruto, presided over the official opening of the 32nd General Assembly of the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO).
Kindiki said Africa’s economic sovereignty and wealth creation remain key to completing the continent’s journey towards full liberation and prosperity.He noted that Africa’s market of about 1.4 billion people, with a combined gross domestic product of approximately $3.4 trillion, presents significant opportunities for businesses and producers across the continent.
However, he warned that multiple product inspections and differing standards among countries continue to create barriers that slow down trade and limit market access.
The Deputy President urged National Standards Institutions to accelerate the development and adoption of harmonised and mutually recognised quality standards.
He said common standards would enable goods produced in one African country to access markets across the continent more seamlessly.
Kindiki said removing such barriers would support businesses, expand markets, promote wealth creation and strengthen Africa’s economic independence.
The ARSO General Assembly brings together stakeholders working to advance standardisation and facilitate trade across Africa.
