Kenyans have 14 days to raise objections or make representations on people proposed for recognition as national heroes.
The National Heroes Council has opened the public participation window, giving citizens until September 15, 2026, to challenge any of the nominees they feel do not deserve the honour.
In a notice signed by Council Chairman Jimmy Nuru Ondieki Angwenyi, the Council called on members of the public to scrutinise the proposed names and submit their views.
“Members of the public who are of the opinion that any person proposed to be honoured is not deserving of such recognition are hereby invited to submit any objections and representations,” the Council said.
The names of the proposed heroes, together with brief summaries of their achievements, have been made available by the Council for public review.
Those wishing to challenge a nomination must submit their objections through sworn affidavits within the 14 day period.
The submissions can be made by email or delivered to the office of the Chief Executive Officer of the National Heroes Council at Embankment Plaza in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The process is being conducted under the Kenya Heroes Act No. 5 of 2014, which established the Council and gave it the responsibility of identifying, selecting and recognising people who have made selfless and exemplary contributions to the country.
The law provides for recognition of heroes across different areas, including the liberation struggle, sports, arts, environmental conservation, peace-making and public service.
The Council also maintains the official register of national heroes and oversees their recognition during national events, including Mashujaa Day.
The latest public participation exercise gives Kenyans an opportunity to have their say before the proposed honours are formally considered.
The Council said all objections and representations received within the deadline will be considered in accordance with the law.
The September 15 deadline therefore gives members of the public two weeks to scrutinise the list and raise any concerns before the process moves to the next stage.
