The government has temporarily relaxed fuel quality standards for six months following supply challenges linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a press release issued Thursday, the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry said the decision was reached after consultations with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the Kenya Bureau of Standards and the National Standards Council.
According to the ministry, disruptions along key global supply routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have made it difficult for suppliers to source fuel that fully complies with current standards.
The adjustment allows the temporary suspension of the maximum sulphur limit of 50 milligrams per kilogram for Automotive Gasoil under KS EAS 177:2025 and Premium Motor Spirit under KS EAS 158:2025.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui said the measure is aimed at safeguarding continuous fuel supply, protecting the economy and ensuring market stability amid global supply disruptions.
The ministry noted that the move is temporary and will be reviewed after six months, or earlier if global supply conditions improve.
