Kenya has stepped up preparations for an African Union summit on local manufacturing of health products scheduled to take place in Nairobi from December 3 to 5, 2026.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga chaired an intergovernmental technical planning meeting on Tuesday to coordinate preparations for the event.
The meeting brought together Co-Principal Secretary for Investment Promotion Abubakar Hassan Abubakar and representatives from other government departments and institutions.
Discussions focused on how different government agencies will work together to prepare for the summit, mobilise resources and engage manufacturers and investors.
The team also discussed assigning responsibilities to ensure the preparations are coordinated ahead of the December meeting.
The event will see African Heads of State and Governments coming together with ministers of health, foreign affairs, trade and industry.
It is anticipated that the conversations will revolve around the enhancement of local production of health products in Africa and bettering the continent’s access to essential medical products.
There will be the African Manufacturers Marketplace Forum, which will take place from December 1st and 2nd preceding the summit.
The event will allow manufacturers, investors, and technology transfer partners to look into investment opportunities and make partnerships.
One of the expected results of the summit is the Nairobi Action Plan, which will oversee the realization of the commitments made during the summit.
The preparations come at a time when African nations are working towards enhancing the local production of health products.
Through coordination across government departments, Kenya is seeking to ensure the summit produces practical outcomes for health security, economic growth and the development of Africa’s manufacturing sector.
