The government has intensified efforts to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare services across the country.
Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni Muriuki said good health remains a key foundation for building a productive and prosperous Kenya.
In a statement, Muthoni said the government, through the Ministry of Health, is implementing a range of measures aimed at improving healthcare access while reducing the financial burden associated with illness.
Among the key interventions is the strengthening of primary healthcare, with the government seeking to improve access to essential services at the community and local health facility levels.
“Good health is the foundation of a productive and prosperous Kenya, the government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Health, is working to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare for all Kenyans,”she said in a statement.
The government is also investing in the equipping of health facilities to improve service delivery and ensure patients can access quality care closer to their homes.
Muthoni said community health promoters remain an important part of the healthcare system, particularly in delivering preventive and promotive health services at the grassroots.
The government is further prioritising maternal and child healthcare as part of efforts to improve health outcomes for mothers and children across the country.
Another major component of the UHC programme is the expansion of health insurance coverage through the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The initiative is intended to increase access to healthcare services while cushioning Kenyans from the high costs associated with medical treatment.
Muthoni said the government is also placing greater emphasis on preventive and promotive healthcare, with the aim of addressing health challenges before they develop into serious conditions requiring costly treatment.
“Good health is the foundation of a productive and prosperous Kenya,” Muthoni said.
She noted that the combined interventions are designed to ensure that every Kenyan, regardless of income level or geographical location, can access quality healthcare.
The government has continued to position UHC as a key component of its healthcare reform agenda, with investments targeting both healthcare infrastructure and access to medical services.
Muthoni said strengthening the health system will help improve service delivery, reduce the financial burden of illness on households and contribute to a healthier and more productive population.
