Kenya Railways has posted yet another milestone on the Madaraka Express Freight Service, hauling a record 695,000 tonnes of cargo in November—surpassing October’s already historic 640,000 tonnes, the highest monthly load since the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) began operations in 2017.

The November performance is equivalent to removing 24,000 trucks from Kenyan highways, while October’s haul translated to about 23,000 trucks, easing road congestion and affirming the SGR’s growing dominance in freight movement.

“This haul is roughly equivalent to taking 23,000 trucks off Kenya’s highways, significantly easing road congestion and highlighting the railway’s growing role in freight transport,” Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) said in an earlier statement regarding the October figures.

The record numbers comprise both containerised and bulk cargo, reflecting increased customer confidence and a broader freight portfolio.

Officials credited the sustained growth to stronger collaboration with clients, improved scheduling, and enhanced operational efficiency at terminals in Mombasa, Nairobi, and Naivasha. The latest achievement also exceeds Kenya Railways’ internal targets and underscores the SGR’s expanding role in regional supply chains.
