Kenya and China are seeking to deepen labour, trade and investment cooperation as the two countries explore new opportunities to expand Chinese investments and create more jobs for Kenyans.
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua held discussions with Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan during a courtesy meeting in Nairobi, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding collaboration across key economic sectors.
Mutua said China remains one of Kenya’s strategic economic partners, highlighting its contribution to the country’s economic transformation. The discussions reviewed milestones in bilateral cooperation, including China’s zero-tariff policy on Kenyan exports, expanded market access for Kenyan products and scholarships enabling Kenyan students to pursue higher education in Chinese universities.
The two sides also explored opportunities to create employment in hospitality, Export Processing Zones (EPZs), manufacturing and aerospace.
Emerging sectors such as electric mobility and locomotive manufacturing were identified as potential areas for increased investment, with Kenya seeking projects that can establish local manufacturing facilities, support technology transfer and generate sustainable employment.
The meeting further emphasised the need for clear labour guidelines for employers and workers in Chinese-owned enterprises operating in Kenya.
The guidelines are expected to strengthen working conditions, protect workers’ rights and promote fair labour practices while creating a conducive environment for investment and shared prosperity.
