The Defence Ministry has informed the public that they have made huge strides in the building of housing units for the Kenya Defence Forces members under the PPP system that is geared at enhancing the living standards of military personnel.

The top government leaders visited KDF housing project at Gilgil Barracks located in Nakuru County where the construction activities are at 80 per cent completion as revealed by the KDF Housing Programme.

This initiative is geared towards solving decades-old problems of finding housing within the military sector by constructing new and decent facilities for the servicemen at various barracks throughout the country.

According to the Ministry of Defence, this programme will deliver 3,069 housing units at Roysambu Nanyuki Lanet, Gilgil and Mariakani barracks. Right now, activities at the above sites are running concurrently.

The project of housing at Roysambu has already produced 500 dwellings units that are fully equipped and were handed over last year as part of the government wide plan of upgrading military infrastructure.

These housing projects are being implemented out under a Build-Transfer scheme which involves both PPP and government/private sector intervention under the Affordable Housing Programmes.

The Ministry noted that beyond improving the welfare of military personnel, the projects have been instrumental in generating employment opportunities for many Kenyans through construction and other related sectors.

The government says the continued investment in military housing has shown that it is a reliable partner in the provision of better living standards to the members of the armed forces as well as a promoter of essential national infrastructure.
