An Administration Police officer was arrested following a fatal road accident that caused protests in Archers Post, Isiolo County.
It is said that the police officer was driving the police vehicle when he accidentally hit a woman in the middle of the busy town centre.
The Toyota Land Cruiser, which belongs to the Border Patrol Unit, has been restricted at the Archers Post Police Station.
The statement from the Counter Terrorism Police Unit released on Saturday, July 5, stated that the incident happened when the officer was driving through the town.
“The driver is currently in custody and the vehicle has been detained,” the statement confirmed.
Some residents claimed that the vehicle was speeding. Also, some believed that the car belonged to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), which fuelled tension in the area.
When the officer surrendered at the police station, angry locals stormed the facility, demanding justice.
Reports of gunshots being fired to disperse the crowd soon followed.
The victim’s body was moved to Isiolo Mortuary as her family and the larger community continue to call for accountability.
This tragic incident comes just days after four police officers died in a separate road crash along the Garissa Highway on June 22.
The officers were travelling in a government vehicle that reportedly lost control and rolled several times.
Two other officers survived but suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
