The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has taken over investigations into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo, who was found dead while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Osiemo was arrested on September 18, 2026, in Kisii following investigations into an assault case reported at Narumoru Police Station.
The case involved allegations that Osiemo, a former farmhand of the complainant, assaulted and stabbed a woman several times at her home on July 2, 2026. The woman was subsequently admitted to Tumutumu Hospital for nine days.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Nanyuki later directed the DCI to take over investigations after concerns were raised over the handling of the case.
Osiemo was arrested in Kisii and initially booked at Keroka Police Station before being transferred to Narumoru Police Station on September 19.
The DCI said he was processed, his statement recorded and returned to the cells after appearing to be in normal condition.
He was scheduled to appear in court on September 21 over the assault allegations.
However, on September 20, Osiemo was found hanging from ventilation grills inside the police cell. The scene was processed in the presence of IPOA officials, senior police officers and a relative before his body was moved to Narumoru mortuary pending autopsy.
The DCI said it will cooperate fully with IPOA as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
