The electoral body has released new rules for the by-elections scheduled for November 27, 2025.

In a statement on Wednesday, IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethukon said campaigns will run from October 8 to November 24, ending two days before the vote. Campaigns will only be allowed between 7am and 6pm.

Ethukon called on politicians to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the law.

Those seeking to contest as independents will be required to get clearance from the Registrar of Political Parties to prove they have not been members of any party for at least three months before the poll.

They must also submit their preferred names and symbols by September 17. The Commission said it will publish the approved symbols in the Kenya Gazette ahead of nominations.

IEBC has set October 3 as the date for a meeting with all aspirants. Returning officers will use the session to explain nomination requirements.

For Senate by-elections, independents must submit a nomination form supported by at least 2,000 registered voters, with their ID details attached. National Assembly candidates will need 1,000 supporters, while ward aspirants will need 500.

Candidates must also present the names of their agents at least two weeks before the by-election.

The Commission added that disputes arising from the process will be handled between October 8 and 17. Cases of breaching the electoral code will be dealt with until the winners are gazetted.
