The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a warning to the public over a fake Gazette Notice circulating online, falsely claiming to announce winners in two upcoming ward by-elections.
In a statement, the Commission dismissed the document — titled “Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025” — as fabricated, urging Kenyans to ignore it and seek information only from IEBC’s official website and verified social media channels.
The falsified notice, which misquoted sections of the Constitution, the IEBC Act (No. 9 of 2011), the Elections Act (No. 24 of 2011), and the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012, falsely declared that there would be no contest in the Tembelio and Metkei ward by-elections.
It also falsely listed Reuben Tobosei and Philip Kiprutto as elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs) under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
“‘Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025’ is fake. The Commission advises the public to disregard it,” the IEBC clarified.
The fake notice emerged as the IEBC continues preparations for the November 27, 2025 by-elections to be held in several wards nationwide. In Elgeyo Marakwet County, the Metkei Ward by-election was necessitated by the election of former MCA Lawi Kibire as Speaker of the County Assembly.
The Commission reiterated the need for the public to rely on authentic and verified information, especially as the country approaches the upcoming polls.
