The government is set to engage the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) over a possible review of allowances paid to Kenyan athletes representing the country in local and international competitions.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the allowances are set by the SRC and any changes must therefore be discussed with the commission.
Mwangi said the ministry was ready to work with sports stakeholders, including players in the national football team, Harambee Stars, through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), to push for a review of the payments.
“All the allowances we pay to athletes are authorised by the SRC. Whenever the need arises to review the allowances, we engage the commission with the request and wait for their approval,” the PS said.
He spoke in Kandara town on Friday during a public engagement exercise attended by residents and local leaders.
Mwangi also addressed concerns over delays in paying Harambee Stars players, saying the ministry was working to resolve outstanding allowances.
He explained that the process of requesting funds from the National Treasury involves several stages, including verification, which can sometimes delay payments.
“The process of requesting money from the Treasury is elaborate and needs verification, which might cause delays, but once the money comes, we pay promptly,” he said.
The PS also urged Kenyans to support Harambee Stars ahead of their match against Eritrea on Saturday.
He called on athletes representing Kenya in different sporting disciplines to maintain patriotism and uphold the country’s image whenever they compete.
Mwangi said wearing the national colours and representing Kenya in international competitions should be treated as a source of pride.
“Even when we have issues that we need addressed, we should put the nation first. It’s the highest level of patriotism and honour to don the national colours and represent the country in any event,” he said.
Harambee Stars are scheduled to face Eritrea in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 Group D qualifier at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
