Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba has sharply criticized a group of Kiambu County legislators who, alongside thousands of their supporters, visited State House to declare that the county is no longer part of the Mount Kenya political bloc.
Speaking in response to the move, Muchomba questioned the priorities of the MPs, accusing them of abandoning real issues affecting Kiambu residents while engaging in divisive politics.
“Kiambu County MPs went to the house on the hill escorted by 4,800 people to proclaim that Kiambu is not part of Mt Kenya. So our biggest problem in Kiambu is being a Mount Kenya county?” she posed.
Muchomba said the proclamation raised more questions than answers, wondering whether the move would have any real impact on services such as road construction, hospital development, access to medicine, or allocation of fertilizer to farmers.
She further faulted National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah for leading the declaration, accusing him of ignoring issues that directly affect the people of Kiambu, such as the long-standing demand for ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ and constituency boundary delimitation for fair representation.
“As Majority Leader, Ichung’wah had the opportunity to push for issues that could have benefited our people. Instead, he chose to spearhead divisive politics,” she stated.
Muchomba dismissed the separation narrative as a political gimmick, claiming that the leaders had lost touch with their constituents and could not hold successful rallies in their backyards.
“These leaders depleted their political ideas. They can only ferry paid masses to secluded places to resuscitate their politics. Kiambu County will not separate from other Mount Kenya counties. We vote as one and coexist,” she affirmed.
She warned that attempts to divide the region would not succeed, pointing to the failed past attempts to pit Mount Kenya East against Mount Kenya West.
“This divisive strategy has been tried before and failed terribly. Even this will fail mercilessly,” Muchomba concluded.
