A group of football fans who thought they had struck gold after securing free tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have now been told to pay up or risk losing their seats.

FIFA has admitted that a glitch on its ticketing platform mistakenly allowed around 60 supporters to complete purchases without being charged, effectively handing them World Cup tickets for free.

The football governing body says the tickets were issued in error and has since contacted the affected fans, giving them seven days to pay the correct amount or have their tickets cancelled.

The tickets in question are understood to be for group-stage matches in Toronto, one of the host cities for the expanded 48-team tournament that will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

While FIFA says it regrets the error, the incident has sparked fresh debate among football fans, with many questioning whether supporters should be forced to pay for a mistake they did not make.

The latest embarrassment comes as FIFA continues to face criticism over its ticketing process. Fans have raised concerns over soaring ticket prices, dynamic pricing models and recurring technical problems during previous sales phases.

For the lucky supporters who believed they had secured the deal of a lifetime, the celebration was short-lived. What appeared to be a World Cup jackpot has now turned into an unexpected bill from FIFA.

The incident is yet another reminder of the challenges facing organizers as demand for tickets to the world’s biggest football tournament continues to soar ahead of kick-off in 2026.
