A man posing as an officer from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) has been arrested for defrauding an Ethiopian refugee of over Sh3 million by falsely promising to help him acquire Kenyan citizenship.

The suspect, Rev. Richard Macharia Njuguna of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA), was arrested at Overstone Hotel in Ruiru following a complaint filed at Capitol Hill Police Station. The case was handed to ATPU for deeper investigations.

Detectives say Njuguna impersonated an ATPU officer attached to the Directorate of Immigration Services and extorted Sh3,030,500 from the refugee between December 2024 and February 2025.

A search of his Kahawa West home and car uncovered fake documents and stamps linked to various government offices, including immigration, judiciary, and foreign missions.

He remains in custody as investigations continue, with his vehicle and forged documents held as evidence.
