Former Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match suspension and fined $20,000 (£14,960) after being found guilty of misconduct by a Confederation of African Football (Caf) disciplinary panel.

In a statement, Caf said Eto’o—now president of Cameroon’s football federation (Fecafoot)—breached its principles of sportsmanship during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Cameroon and Morocco.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was reportedly seen making angry gestures in protest at officiating decisions as the Indomitable Lions suffered a 2-0 defeat to the host nation.

Caf president Patrice Motsepe, who was present at the stadium in Rabat, is understood to have witnessed Eto’o’s reaction.

Earlier this week, Caf announced it had opened an investigation into “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials” during the quarter-final matches.

Fecafoot has since rejected Caf’s ruling, claiming the disciplinary process “raises serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.” In a statement issued on Wednesday, the federation expressed its support for Eto’o and indicated that he is likely to appeal against the sanction.

Eto’o, who took office in 2021, has seen his reputation as a football legend increasingly overshadowed by controversy.

His tenure has been marked by allegations of misconduct and poor governance, with some stakeholders pointing to serious irregularities within Fecafoot.

Eto’o has consistently denied the accusations, citing what he describes as significant achievements during his leadership.
