Disease Warning in July: Kenya Met Cautions Public Over Health Risks from Cold Weather

Disease warning in July has been issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, which is raising the alarm over a possible rise in four cold-related illnesses this month.

In its latest climate outlook, the Met Department says the ongoing cold season especially over Nairobi and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley could lead to an increase in cases of pneumonia, asthma, flu, and the common cold.

“These conditions are orobaly cause an increse in trigger respiratory illnesses, people living in Nairobi, parts of Central Kenya, the South Rift, and areas around the Lake Victoria Basin should take extra caution and care .”

The department has also advised that the public to dress warmly and avoid using charcoal jikos in enclosed spaces, as in such situations jikos have risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

July in Kenya is peak of the cold season and this year, much of the country is expected to experience below-normal daytime temperatures, with some areas seeing daytime highs of under 20°C. Nighttime temperatures could also drop below 10°C in parts of Narok, Laikipia, Eldoret, and Nyahururu.

People to expect cool and cloudy conditions dominating Nairobi, Central Highlands, and parts of Western Kenya. Areas like Turkana, Garissa, and parts of the Coast will remain mostly warm and dry.

While the cold brings health concerns, the rains in parts of the Rift Valley and western Kenya are expected to support farming activities, according to the Met Department.

Motorists have also been warned of fog and slippery roads in affected areas, particularly along the Nairobi-Naivasha highway and have been urged to follow road rules and take caution while driving
