The Communist Party Marxist Kenya (CPMK) has condemned what it terms the arbitrary arrest and continued detention of one of its organisers, Comrade Darwin Wangechi, who was seized from his home in Laikipia County on Thursday, April 16, 2025.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, April 20, the Party accused local authorities of acting under orders from “repressive state apparatus” and deliberately targeting Wangechi for his political work.
The statement alleges that since his arrest, Wangechi has been denied legal representation, and neither his family nor fellow party members have been allowed to visit him.
The authorities are reportedly holding him on suspicions of cybercrime—an accusation the CPMK describes as “baseless” and a tactic aimed at silencing political dissent.
“This is a calculated manoeuvre, part of a familiar script used by the state to criminalise dissent and suppress political organisers,” read the statement. The Party also claimed the arrest was timed to ensure Wangechi remained in custody over the weekend, thus delaying legal recourse.
According to the CPMK, Wangechi’s arrest is not an isolated case but part of a broader crackdown on revolutionary forces and grassroots activists critical of government policies. The Party linked the incident to what it called “a decaying, comprador state that serves imperialist interests.”
The CPMK is now calling on workers, students, and the wider public to organise solidarity actions, reject what it calls state intimidation, and demand Wangechi’s immediate and unconditional release.
“No amount of repression, arrests, or intimidation will silence our movement,” said the Central Organising Committee, vowing continued resistance.
The statement ends with chants of defiance, including: “Free Comrade Darwin Now! Down with State Repression! Victory to the People’s National Democratic Revolution! Ruto Must Go!”
