Communication Authority Of Kenya (CAK), has assured Kenyans’ that the government of Kenya will not censor freedom of speech during the on coming general election next year, CAK Chairperson Charles Karondo has said. Karondo has said Kenya will not be like the other neighbouring countries they will ensure communicate freely within the law. He acknowledge concerns about misinformation and incitement online, but emphasised that the regulator has no intentions of restricting democratic communication.
“As a commission, we have no intentions of taking such action because Kenya is a democracy and we are not here to censor the freedom of speech of any Kenyan,” Karondo said, adding CAK will uphold legal bounds while protecting open communication.
CAK, has engaged other state agencies, including the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), to ensure accountability for all forms of communication and the right laws are in place. This assurance comes after recent moves by authorities in parts of Est Africa to limit online communication during elections.
Karondo, made this statement at Marewa in Kiharu Constituency, Murang’a County while handing over a new house built for a neighbouring family. In attendance were Deputy State House Comptroller Simon Gikuru, Mbeere North MP Leo Wamuthende, and JCM bishop Ben Kiengei, among others.
