Kenyan filmmaker and digital creator Abel Mutua has resurfaced in the news months after he was robbed at knifepoint in Kahawa West, following the emergence of a video in which a suspect appears to confess to the crime.
The incident, which occurred on October 7, 2025, took place near Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital morgue, where the assailants reportedly made away with Mutua’s iPhone 16 Pro Max and a pair of Bose headphones.
In the newly surfaced video, a man identifying himself as Tevin Muiruri Maina is seen inside what appears to be a police vehicle, claiming responsibility for the robbery and appealing directly to Mutua for forgiveness.
“Naitwa Tevin Muiruri Maina, mimi ndio niliweza kuibia Abel Mutua. Ningependa tu kusema anisamehe… nampenda tu enyewe anisamehe tu. Anipatie chance tu kadogo, nijitoe tu kwa hii mawe… nikosekane hii Nairobi. Ile siku nitaonekana hii Nairobi waniuwe,” the suspect says in the clip.
The development has reignited public attention around the case, which had earlier sparked concern over rising incidents of violent robbery in parts of Nairobi.
Under Kenyan law, robbery with violence is classified as a capital offence and carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death sentence, depending on the circumstances and court determination.
The case also highlights ongoing concerns about urban security, particularly in areas around major institutions such as universities and hospitals, which have occasionally been flagged as hotspots for crime.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the authenticity of the video or the status of the suspect.
