Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat is now free to resume duties after a case seeking to block him from office was officially withdrawn on Wednesday.

The petition wanted to bar Lagat from accessing his office or using any National Police Service facilities, pending investigations into the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody last month.

Justice Diana Kavedza allowed the withdrawal, saying the case had been overtaken by events.

“The application is withdrawn as prayed. We will mention the matter on the 10th for directions on the main petition,” she said.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who is representing the petitioner, said the legal team now plans to update the main petition to reflect new developments in the case.

So far, six police officers, including Central Police OCS Samson Talaam and an officer named James Mukhwana, have been charged with murder in connection with Ojwang’s death.

A requiem mass was held for Ojwang on Wednesday, July 2, ahead of his burial scheduled for Friday. His family continued to call for full accountability.
