Kenya will close the harvesting and sea export season for Hass, Fuerte, Pinkerton and Jumbo avocados from October 30, 2026, following a decline in production volumes.
The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), through the Horticultural Crops Directorate, said a countrywide survey established that current avocado supplies were insufficient to support sea shipments.
However, exports of the four varieties by air will continue, subject to inspection and traceability requirements. All consignments must undergo clearance by the directorate before export.
The closure also applies to avocado oil processors and imports of avocado fruit intended for oil processing. Processors holding oil stocks for export during the closed season must request verification through directorhcd@afa.go.ke by November 2, 2026. Only stocks verified in advance will be cleared for export.
Meanwhile, AFA has warned mango exporters against mixing mango consignments with avocados for sea shipment following the seasonal closure.
The authority said all mango export consignments must undergo physical inspection before an export certificate is issued. Exporters must ensure permits cover mango fruits only and apply for inspection through directorhcd@afa.go.ke, clearly indicating the packhouse location.
AFA warned that exporters and avocado oil processors who violate the guidelines risk having their export licences revoked. Permits will also be withheld for consignments initiated contrary to the regulations.
The directorate said it would continue monitoring avocado maturity and issue further guidance as necessary.
