The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works has lauded progress in the construction of the Lumumba Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu County, emphasising the need to ensure that low-income earners benefit from the Government’s affordable housing programme.

Led by Committee Vice Chairperson Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi, a sub Committee of the Members inspected the project in Kisumu Central Constituency on Friday, October 23, 2026, to assess its implementation and progress towards completion.

The project, which was reported to be between 70 and 80 per cent complete, comprises residential blocks and associated amenities and infrastructure intended to support a modern, integrated housing development.

“We want to see ordinary Kenyans, particularly low-income earners, benefit from these houses. The social impact of the affordable housing programme must be felt by residents in the areas where the projects are being implemented,” said Hon. Mugambi.

The Committee noted the progress made at the site, with the development expected to expand access to decent housing while supporting the growth of Kisumu’s urban landscape.

The proposed Lumumba Affordable Housing Project comprises 15 residential blocks, including seven Block A buildings, each rising to 16 floors; seven Block B buildings, also rising to 16 floors; and one Block C building, rising to 11 floors and designated for mixed-use development.

Upon completion, the project is expected to deliver a total of 2,373 housing units. These include 1,323 units under Typology A, 952 units under Typology B and 98 units under Typology C.

In addition to the residential units, the development incorporates supporting facilities and infrastructure, including garbage receptacles, guard houses, a power house, access roads, sewer systems, an underground water tank and installation services.

The associated amenities are intended to support a functional residential environment and improve the quality of life for future occupants.

The Committee’s inspection forms part of its oversight role in monitoring the implementation of affordable housing projects and assessing whether they are progressing towards their intended objectives.

Members emphasised the importance of ensuring that the completed units are accessible to the intended beneficiaries, particularly households that face challenges securing decent and affordable accommodation.

The Committee is also undertaking inspections of affordable housing projects in other parts of the Nyanza and Western regions as part of its wider assessment of the programme’s implementation.
