The government has set aside KSh25 billion to compensate landowners affected by the construction of the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension.

Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga said the National Land Commission (NLC) is conducting public participation ahead of compensation for affected landowners along the Narok-Bomet-Kisumu section.

Mainga noted that Kenya Railways had received early access to some sections of land as valuation and compensation negotiations continue.

Speaking during a public participation session in Narok on Friday, Mzee Stephen Ruto of Kapkesosio village welcomed the project, saying it would connect Bomet County to other parts of Kenya, the East African region and beyond.

The SGR Phase 2B construction is progressing, with the railway expected to cover approximately 98 kilometres in Narok County and pass through Bomet, Nyamira, Kericho, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.

The project will feature an economic corridor incorporating logistics hubs and value-addition facilities to support agriculture, livestock, tourism, tea and fisheries.

The railway is expected to improve the transportation of locally produced goods, including tea, coffee and sugar, to the Port of Mombasa for export.

Launched by President William Ruto on March 19, 2026, the project is expected to take approximately two years, with Narok station partially completed by June 2027.
