The secretariat of ODM party leader Dr Oburu Oginga has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the veteran politician had died at a Nairobi hospital.
In an official communiqué issued on November 6, 2026, Oburu’s office described the reports as malicious propaganda and deliberate misinformation intended to mislead the public.
The secretariat confirmed that Oburu was “well, safe, and in good spirits” despite ongoing speculation about his health.
The statement also named social media commentator Maverick Aoko as the source of the claims, accusing her of spreading false information about the ODM leader’s condition.
“The Office of the Party Leader wishes to categorically condemn and debunk the malicious, unfounded fake news and propaganda currently being circulated on social media platforms regarding the health and wellbeing of the senior statesman and ODM party leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga,” the communiqué stated.
The office accused individuals behind the reports of weaponising social media platforms to spread falsehoods and gain attention.
Oburu under doctor’s orders to rest
According to his secretariat, Oburu is currently observing a period of rest on doctor’s orders but remains mentally engaged with political and party matters.
The office said the ODM leader had been preparing remarks for the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga Mausoleum handover ceremony scheduled to take place at Kang’o ka Jaromagi.
It further dismissed the reports of his death as “malicious propaganda” and “fake news”, warning that those responsible could face legal consequences.
“We are in communication with the party leadership to handle the matter legally,” the secretariat said, urging those spreading what it termed harmful digital content to stop.
The statement came shortly after several political leaders moved to reassure Kenyans about Oburu’s condition.
Gladys Wanga visits Oburu
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who also serves as ODM national chairperson, said she had personally visited Oburu and confirmed that he was doing well.
“My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery,” Wanga said.
The clarification followed a wave of social media posts claiming that Oburu had died, prompting concerns among ODM supporters and political leaders.
Oburu, the elder brother of the late former prime minister Raila Odinga, remains a senior figure within ODM and Kenyan politics.
