Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned road contractors who are delaying the completion of critical infrastructure projects, saying those who fail to meet their contractual obligations will be removed from the projects.
Prof. Kindiki said there was no room for contractors who fail to deliver on their agreements while Kenyans wait to benefit from government projects.
“From now on, we have no business with road contractors who delay the work of the people of Kenya yet they have been paid by the Government,” DP said.
Speaking on Tuesday while inspecting development projects in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, the Deputy President said his responsibility was to ensure government projects were completed on time and met the required standards.
“All the lazy contractors who are slowing down the work assigned to them will be kicked out. My work is to ensure the government’s projects are completed on time and meet required standards. There is no place for those playing around with the work assigned to them,” he emphasized.
The Deputy President inspected the progress of the Mungetho–Thuthwa–Kathutho-Katiki Road, which is currently being tarmacked in the constituency. He later addressed residents at Thutwa Trading Centre.
The road is among several projects under construction in Mathira. Other roads at various stages of completion include Muthua–Kiawarigi–Kabiruini, Karura–Kiawarigi and Kiamwangi–Kahuru to Gitemaini roads.
“This region is home to hardworking farmers. For a long period, this area has been left behind. Milk gets spoiled on the way; when it rains, milk trucks cannot pass, and the milk gets spoiled. These roads are therefore meant to improve dairy and coffee farming,” DP indicated.
In Nyeri County, the Government has allocated Sh45 billion for the construction of 775 kilometres of roads covering all six constituencies: Mathira, Othaya, Mukurwe-ini, Kieni, Nyeri Town and Tetu.
The Government is also expanding electricity connectivity to an additional 12,000 homes following an extra allocation of Sh650 million.
Thirteen modern markets are also under development, including Marikiti Market, which has been completed in Karatina Town. In addition, 10 affordable housing projects and six hostel projects are ongoing across the county.
Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri Town, which had stalled for more than 15 years, has also been revived and construction is progressing. The facility is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
The Government has allocated Sh1 billion for the upgrading of Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Othaya to a Level Six facility, while another Sh1 billion has been allocated to revamp Nyeri Level Five Hospital.
Kindiki calls for Mt Kenya unity
The Deputy President also urged residents of the Mt Kenya region to maintain unity, saying political differences should not create divisions or hostility among communities.
“Those of us who come from this region of Mount Kenya, let us maintain our unity. Let us not fight because of politics. Politics will come and go, but we will continue to be one community,” he said.
He called on politicians to avoid inciting residents against their opponents, stressing that citizens have a democratic right to support leaders of their choice.
“All politicians, across all political sides, should calm down. Do not incite citizens to stone someone’s vehicle or harass someone simply because you disagree with them. Sell your politics, sell your policies, and let the other person sell theirs. Let the people decide who will win and lead us. Whoever loses should wait; God will help them another time,” DP emphasized.
The Deputy President was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, MPs Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni), MCAs and other leaders.
