The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has given roadside traders and other occupants 30 days to remove illegal structures and goods from road reserves along four major roads.
In a notice dated Tuesday, September 29, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said those affected must clear the road reserves by Thursday, October 29, 2026.
The directive covers roads in Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Tana River, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties.
The affected roads are the Likoni-Ukunda-Lunga Lunga road linking Mombasa and Kwale, and the Kilifi-Malindi-Garsen-Witu road, which passes through Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu.
Also affected is the Maili Tisa-Kitalo road, which connects Kenya to South Sudan, and the Eldoret-Nyaru road linking Uasin Gishu and Baringo counties.
“All affected occupants are, therefore, required, through this Notice, to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within thirty days from the date of this Notice,” KeNHA said.
The Authority warned that anyone who fails to comply by the October 29 deadline will have their structures and goods removed without further notice.
KeNHA said the owners will also be required to meet the cost of removing the structures.
The clearance is meant to pave the way for planned improvements along the roads, including construction of service roads, bus bays and drainage works.
KeNHA said the works are part of an ongoing performance-based maintenance and road safety programme aimed at improving safety and reducing traffic congestion.
The Authority also reminded the affected occupants that illegal occupation of road reserves is an offence under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007, and the Traffic Act, Cap 403.
“Upon the expiry of the 30 days, Thursday, October 29, 2026, any structures or goods remaining within the said section of the road reserves shall be removed without further reference to the owners,” KeNHA warned.
The removal exercise will be carried out under laws governing the protection and management of road reserves, the Authority said.
