The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has extended the closure of a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi by another three months as construction of a new bridge continues.
The road, which was initially scheduled to reopen on September 18, 2026, will now remain closed until December 30, 2026.
KURA announced the extension in a statement issued on Monday, September 28, saying the delay was caused by logistical and site-related challenges encountered during construction.
The section was closed on May 18 to allow contractors to build a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River.
According to KURA, delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment also affected the project timeline.
“We wish to notify the general public that the closure of the section of Eldoret Road, Nairobi, earlier communicated to run from 6 AM Monday, May 18, 2026, till 6 PM Friday, September 18, 2026, has been extended until 6 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2026,” KURA stated.
The authority said some of the delays were beyond the contractor’s control.
“The extension has become necessary due to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges encountered during the construction of the Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River, including delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, which were beyond the contractor’s control,” KURA added.
KURA said it was working to fast-track the remaining works and complete the project within the new timeline.
Motorists have been advised to continue using alternative routes provided when the closure was first announced.
Those travelling through the Eastlands area can use parallel local roads and other major connecting roads to access Jogoo Road and other arterial roads.
Motorists can also use connections around Ngong Road, Mbagathi Road and Lang’ata Road, depending on their destinations.
Traffic police officers and marshals will also be deployed along the affected routes to help direct motorists and manage traffic.
KURA Announces Mlolongo-Kamulu Road Closure
KURA also announced the partial closure of the Mlolongo-Kamulu Road, also known as Quarry Road, for two months.
The closure will run from Thursday, October 1, to Tuesday, December 1, 2026, to allow construction works along the road.
“KURA wishes to notify the general public of a temporary traffic disruption along the Mlolongo–Kamulu (Quarry Road), effective Thursday, October 1, 2026, until Tuesday, December 1, 2026,” the authority said.
During the closure, light and medium vehicles will be expected to use the Syokimau-Katani Road and Syokimau-Parliament Road.
Heavy commercial vehicles have been directed to use Tuffoam Road for the duration of the works.
