Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has called on the Jubilee Party to convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to determine who will succeed former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the party’s leader.
Wambugu said the process should be conducted through the party’s established structures, warning against attempts to use shortcuts to settle the leadership question.
He maintained that Jubilee delegates should be given the opportunity to choose the party’s next leader through a properly constituted NDC.
“Only the National Delegates Convention (NDC) that I have been asking for can and will determine who is our next Party Leader after our beloved Uhuru Kenyatta. No more shortcuts,” Wambugu said.
He further urged Jubilee members to remain calm as the party navigates the transition, adding, “So watu watulie.”
His remarks come as the party faces a leadership transition following a High Court ruling concerning the eligibility of retired presidents to hold formal leadership positions in political parties. Uhuru Kenyatta has said he will comply with the court’s decision and relinquish the Jubilee Party leadership.
The succession is expected to attract significant interest as Jubilee prepares to reorganise its leadership and position itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
