Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stepped up consultations with other political leaders, meeting former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri as concerns grow over political intolerance and inflammatory rhetoric ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo said the meeting focused on the state of the nation, particularly what he described as growing political intolerance and hate speech that continues to go unchecked.
He singled out remarks attributed to nominated MP Joseph Wainaina, saying the comments should be condemned by Kenyans.
“We addressed the growing political intolerance and hate speech that continues to go unchecked, particularly the remarks by Nominated MP Joseph Wainaina, which must be condemned in the strongest terms by all right-thinking Kenyans,”He said in a statement.
The meeting comes amid increased scrutiny of political statements as Kenya heads towards the 2027 elections. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has already summoned Wainaina over alleged inflammatory remarks made while addressing residents in Ngeria, Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, on August 29.
Kalonzo said the discussions with Ngunjiri will continue, signalling possible closer engagement between the Wiper leader and the Farmers Party leader as political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls gather momentum.
The meeting was attended by WPF spokesperson and Treasurer Ndegwa Njiru and Gideon Mulyungi, as well as EALA MP Kennedy Kalonzo. Ngunjiri was accompanied by officials from his party.
Kalonzo has increasingly placed political violence, intolerance and the conduct of state institutions at the centre of his 2027 messaging. In an August statement, he called for stronger measures to prevent electoral violence and urged institutions to protect citizens’ rights to campaign, assemble and vote peacefully.
The latest meeting also comes against a backdrop of growing concern over inflammatory political rhetoric in the country. The NCIC has warned that hate speech, ethnic incitement and violent rhetoric threaten national cohesion and democratic governance.
