Kenya has signed minutes of an on-site feasibility study with China to pave the way for the upgrading of Londiani Sub-County Hospital and Baringo County Referral Hospital into modern Level 5 facilities.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale signed the minutes with the Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, marking a key step towards fast-tracking the development and equipping of the two priority hospitals.
The projects are being implemented under Kenya-China cooperation through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), in support of the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and efforts to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Following the signing, the Exchange of Notes between the two governments will proceed, while identified Chinese companies prepare to commence the works.
Londiani and Baringo hospitals will constitute the first phase of a wider programme targeting five priority facilities, aimed at strengthening referral capacity and expanding access to specialised and affordable healthcare.
Duale said the Government will accelerate implementation, improve coordination and address outstanding technical issues to ensure the projects are delivered within agreed timelines.
He was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga and Deputy Director General at the State Department for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Jane Makor.
