Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called for faster implementation of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, saying the project will play a critical role in creating jobs, attracting investment and positioning Mombasa as a major regional trade and industrial hub.
Mudavadi said the government is working to align relevant state institutions and development partners on the next steps required to move the multi-billion-shilling project from planning to tangible economic impact.
He described Dongo Kundu as more than an infrastructure project, noting that it is central to Kenya’s efforts to develop new industries, expand trade and create opportunities for young people.
“The Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone is more than an infrastructure project, it is about building Kenya’s next generation of jobs, industries and global opportunities,” Mudavadi said.
He spoke after convening a consultative session bringing together government institutions and partners involved in the project, with discussions focusing on accelerating implementation and unlocking its investment potential.
According to Mudavadi, the government’s immediate focus is to create an environment that can attract both local and international investors while expanding economic opportunities around the coastal region.
He said strengthening Kenya’s partnership with Japan and aligning financing and implementation plans will be critical in ensuring that Dongo Kundu achieves its intended objectives.
The project is expected to strengthen Mombasa’s position as a gateway for regional and international commerce while supporting industrial development, trade and employment.
Mudavadi said the government remains committed to ensuring that the project delivers measurable benefits to Kenyans, particularly through job creation, investment and expanded business opportunities.
