Kenya Railways Dismisses Safety Fears, Confirms Nairobi–Nyahururu Train Will Continue Operating

Kenya Railways Corporation has sent warning to the public over a surge in fraudulent train bookings, cautioning Kenyans to remain vigilant when purchasing tickets.

In a statement issued on July 10, 2026, the corporation said fraudsters are impersonating the corporation through fake websites, social media pages and other channels to swindle passengers.

Passengers have reported financial losses through the train booking services after discovering their tickets were invalid when they arrived at the station.

“Kenya Railways wishes to notify members of the public that fraudulent websites, social media pages and individuals are impersonating the corporation and deceiving customers in making payments through fraudulent channels, resulting in financial loss,” the notice said.

The scammers are particularly targeting routes with high demand, including the Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), where tickets often sell out quickly.

They also emphasized that all genuine bookings must be made through official channels: the Kenya Railways websites or via the USSD code *639# and they should verify booking channels before making any payments.
