The government has reported significant progress in upgrading Nairobi’s sewerage infrastructure under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, with works currently underway in Lucky Summer and Baba Dogo areas of Ruaraka Constituency.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, the project includes the construction of a 27-kilometre trunk sewer line along the Nairobi River corridor to intercept wastewater and divert it away from the river and nearby residential areas.

Once complete, the upgraded sewer network is expected to treat up to 60 million litres of wastewater per day, a move aimed at reducing pollution, improving sanitation and restoring the Nairobi River ecosystem.

Dr. Omollo said the infrastructure upgrade is part of broader government efforts to modernise Nairobi’s critical infrastructure in response to the city’s rapid urban growth.

He added that the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative has so far created employment opportunities for more than 45,000 youth and women who are engaged in river clean-up, drainage maintenance and environmental restoration activities.

“The initiative demonstrates the strong link between infrastructure development, environmental conservation and community empowerment,” he said.

Dr. Omollo further noted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, through National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), has been coordinating implementation of the project while mobilising local communities to participate in the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative.

The Nairobi River Regeneration Programme is one of the government’s flagship initiatives aimed at restoring the city’s river ecosystem while improving sanitation and supporting sustainable urban development.
