Presidential aspirant and Senior Counsel Martha Karua has departed Entebbe and is en route to Nairobi following her brief detention and denial of entry by Ugandan authorities earlier today.

According to a media statement shared on her social media accounts, Karua was held at Entebbe International Airport upon arrival before being turned away. No official explanation has yet been provided by Ugandan authorities regarding the decision.

“We can confirm that Presidential Aspirant and Senior Counsel Martha Karua has departed Entebbe and is en route to Nairobi following her detention and denial of entry by Ugandan authorities earlier today,”a statement from her team read.

She is expected to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) later in the day, where members of the media have been invited to a press briefing scheduled for 4:00 PM.

During the briefing, she is expected to address the circumstances surrounding her detention, denial of entry, and subsequent release.

The incident has sparked regional political interest, with renewed questions about adherence to the rule of law and the state of democratic freedoms within the East African Community.
