Motorists using Mombasa Road this weekend have been advised to plan their journeys early after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the temporary closure of a section of the busy highway to allow for the installation of a pedestrian footbridge.
In a public notice dated June 12, KeNHA said the affected section is on the Nairobi-bound carriageway between the Airtel Complex and General Motors area along the A8 highway.
The road will be closed from 9 pm of Saturday, June 20, until 10 am on Sunday, June 21.
The closure will come about due to the need to erect fabricated beams at the site for the ongoing construction of the Airtel Footbridge project.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) would like to inform the general public that there shall be a temporary closure of a section of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), stretching between Airtel Complex and General Motors, from 9:00 pm to 10:00 am on Saturday, June 20, 2026, and Sunday, June 21, 2026,” states the press release.
The notice indicates that motorists entering Nairobi at night and in the early hours of the day should brace themselves for inconveniences as the project continues.
Mombasa Road happens to be one of the most congested corridors in the nation, ferrying thousands of passengers daily as well as freight goods shipped via the Port of Mombasa to Nairobi and other regions in Kenya and beyond.
The footbridge, when it comes up, will make life easier for pedestrians who regularly traverse the highway, especially near the industrial estate where there is constant flow of traffic.
The new footbridge will minimize cases of pedestrian accidents along a route which has traditionally been deemed hazardous for walking passersby.
The Kenya National Highways Authority has called upon motorists to comply with traffic guidance measures that will be taken in the course of the project and work hand in glove with the police officers stationed there.
