Kenya marked its 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir on Monday, with President William Ruto outlining plans to strengthen education, expand skills development and accelerate climate resilience efforts as part of the country’s long-term economic transformation agenda.

The national celebrations were held at Wajir Stadium in Wajir County and brought together top government officials, county leaders and residents in marking the historic day that commemorates Kenya’s attainment of internal self-rule.

In his Madaraka Day address, President William Ruto underscored the role of education, innovation and green skills in shaping the country’s future, saying investments in these areas are critical to achieving long-term economic transformation and prosperity.

Speaking under the theme, ‘Education, Skills, and the Future,’ he highlighted that the Kenyan government was determined to ensure that young people are endowed with relevant knowledge and skills so that they can succeed in a fast-changing environment through the green economy transition.

The President also pointed out the great economic opportunities for development within northern Kenya, especially in the sectors of renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, pastoralist cattle rearing, and water management.

He also noted that the Government had many ongoing projects that were intended to rehabilitate degraded grazing lands, climate smart agropastoralism, irrigation, and resilience building in case of climatic shocks such as drought.

The interventions have been put into place, according to the President, to improve the ecosystem and enhance food security, provide jobs that sustain life, and also promote economic growth in areas that are extremely susceptible to the impacts of climate change.

The function was graced by the First Lady of Kenya, Rachel Ruto; the Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki; Cabinet Secretaries; Principal Secretaries, among others Festus Ng’eno; as well as other leaders from national and county governments.

The State Department for Environment and Climate Change reiterated its dedication to the restoration of the ecosystem, sustainable natural resources management, climate adaptation, and green growth.

The department assured its alignment with the bigger picture of the government’s goal of inclusive development while ensuring that a climate-resilient country is built.

This year’s celebration emphasized the connection between education, skills enhancement, and climate action as the leadership calls for more investment in human resource development to ensure sustainability of Kenya for generations to come.
