President William Ruto has joined the country in mourning following the deadly fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that has so far claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens injured.
The President, in a condolence message, described the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy, saying the country was mourning young lives cut short while still full of dreams and promise.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost their beloved daughters in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil,” Ruto said.
“No words can truly ease the pain of losing young lives filled with promise, hope, and dreams for the future.”
The Head of State said the government’s immediate focus was on rescue efforts, treatment of the injured students and support for affected families as investigations continue into the cause of the deadly inferno.
“Our immediate attention is focused on the rescue of those affected, the treatment of the injured, and support for their families, while investigations continue into the cause of the fire,” he stated.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Education CS Julius Ogamba and DCI Director Mohamed Amin had earlier arrived at the school as authorities intensified investigations into the tragedy that has thrown the country into mourning.
Police confirmed that 74 students were admitted to hospitals with injuries following the fire that broke out at one of the dormitories in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The tragedy has once again raised painful questions about safety standards in boarding schools, coming months after other deadly school fire incidents that shocked the nation.
Ruto also conveyed his condolences to parents, teachers and students affected by the disaster.
“May God grant comfort and strength to the grieving families during this painful time. Poleni sana,” the President said.
