Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, Dennis Itumbi, has alleged that an Akorino church was attacked and sound equipment stolen by individuals claiming to be acting on instructions from a “tribal warlord,” in what he suggested could be politically motivated intimidation.

In a statement, Itumbi claimed the incident targeted members of the Akorino faith who had recently chosen to focus on economic and spiritual development through a theological college and a savings cooperative instead of engaging in politics.

“An Akorino Church was attacked and sound equipment stolen, by thugs claiming to be obeying orders from a known Tribal Warlord. Reason? Akorino Faith members chose a Theological College and a sacco to grow themselves over politics,” he said.

The alleged attack comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions following a recent visit by Akorino faithful to State House, an event that has triggered sharp divisions within Mt Kenya politics.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had publicly criticised members of the sect who attended the State House meeting, accusing them of betrayal and suggesting they were motivated by personal gain.

In response, Itumbi defended the visit, stating it had been planned months in advance and dismissing claims that it was politically driven.

In one of his posts, Itumbi appeared to indirectly reference Gachagua while using the term “tribal warlord” in the heated exchange surrounding the visit.

Itumbi now claims the alleged church attack reflects growing intolerance toward groups choosing to remain independent of political influence.

“It is unfortunate that those who claim to champion democracy are the same ones undermining freedom,” he said, adding that the affected members had resolved to reject intimidation and would instead exercise their democratic rights at the ballot.
