Political situation sharply divided the Nairobi County Assembly after the signing of a cooperation deal between the National Government and the County Government.

The Sh80 billion deal, which was signed by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, has caused a split among the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) with one group aggressively pushing for the impeachment of the Governor while the other supports the agreement.

A group of MCAs, led by Kileleshwa ward representative Robert Alai, has petitioned for the removal of Sakaja, blaming him for recklessly and irresponsibly penning the pact while attending to no supervisory or consultative body. Alai says that the group has now reached the required number of members to table an impeachment motion against the Governor.

According to the pro, impeachment group, the cooperation deal is contrary to the constitutional mandate of the county government and furthermore it will definitely be hard for the County Assembly to carry out oversight.

Nonetheless, Antony Kiragu led faction has downplayed the rumors of the impeachment drive by saying that there is no formal motion before the House.

This faction has equally supported, in words and deeds, the signing of the agreement, saying that the cooperation between the two levels of government is essential to improving the delivery of services in the capital.
