Kenya has boosted its livestock sector with the commissioning of a Ksh3 billion animal feed plant by De Heus Kenya in Athi River.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe who launched the facility said the investment marks a shift from increasing herd numbers to improving productivity per animal.

He said the government target to double milk production from 5.2 billion litres 10 billion litres annually through better feed and efficiency.

The plant, owned by global feed producer Royal De Heus, is the largest pellet-making feed mill in the region, with an annual capacity of 240,000 metric tonnes.

It is set to create 280 direct jobs and over 1,000 indirect opportunities.

Equipped with a modern laboratory for advanced feed testing and quality control, the facility will serve up to 80,000 farmers annually.

The government is also planning to introduce a feed quality index, expand irrigation through dam construction, commercialize land for maize and soya production, and establish feed reserves to stabilize prices.
