Tanzania thrashed Kenya 3-1 in post-match penalty shootout during the return leg at Azam Complex Stadium in Temeke District, Dar es Salaam.

The victory sends them to the fourth round, the final hurdle to securing a place at the prestigious FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The hosts held their nerve in the shootout to sail through to the decisive stage at the home ground of former Tanzanian champions Azam FC.

Tanzania coach Bakari Shime termed the result a bittersweet victory, praising the Rising Starlets for their courage and resilience.

Valery Nekesa’s thunderous header crashed off the crossbar in the 13th minute as Kenya piled early pressure. Captain Fasila Adhiambo continued the push, delivering a dangerous corner in the 25th minute.

After the match ended in a 1-1 draw, they proceeded to penalties where Tanzania triumphed 3-1. Tanzania will face Cameroon in the fourth round.
