The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced that it is investigating a case of a fatal shooting by police officers from Karatina Police Station, Nyeri County.

IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan said in a statement that the investigation will be on the events that led to the killing of George Gathu Matheri who was shot after a short confrontation with the police officers on patrol.

IPOA says that the incident happened on the evening of 18th January at around 11 pm when Matheri allegedly came across the officers during a patrol in Karatina town. What started as a confrontation is said to have escalated to a degree that resulted in the death of one person by shooting.

The incident led to protests from angry residents who blocked the Nairobi, Karatina road and also disrupted traffic. A few surrounding shops were also damaged due to the unrest.

Later, IPOA sent a rapid response team from its Nyeri regional office to start investigation, collect information and others with the aim of getting the complete account of the event.

The authority also disclosed that the crime scene has been secured for the gathering of important evidence including forensic and ballistic analysis.
