Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed his life is in danger following the withdrawal of his state security detail, a move he says reflects escalating political hostility from President William Ruto’s administration.

Speaking during an interview with K24 TV on Monday, January 12, 2026, Gachagua said he was no longer under government protection despite his years of service in public office and his continued influence in national politics.

“I want to tell the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is not safe. The government withdrew security from him,” Gachagua said, arguing that his seniority and political standing warrant continued protection.

He claimed that millions of Kenyans support him and described himself as a key political figure whose role in shaping the 2027 presidential race makes him a potential target.

“Despite the fact that I was removed from office, millions of Kenyans are behind me. I am a senior leader who deserves protection because of my service and my role in determining the next presidential election,” he said.

Gachagua further accused President Ruto of deliberately sidelining him politically, alleging that the Head of State had “lost the mountain” and was reacting out of bitterness.

The claims come amid heightened political tension following an incident on Sunday, January 11, 2026, when teargas was reportedly deployed near AIPCA Kiamuoria Church in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, where Gachagua was attending a service.

Addressing congregants in Kikuyu and Swahili, Gachagua apologised to women and children who were affected by the teargas and accused the government of using security agencies to intimidate him and his supporters.

“Msijali, poleni sana watoto na kina mama wale wameguzwa na teargas. Hii imekuwa ni tabia ya William Ruto kupiga watu kanisani,” he told the congregation.
