Every year, thousands of qualified KCSE candidates miss out on college placements at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) not because they failed their exams, but because they failed the application process.

As the January 27, 2026 deadline for the March intake approaches, education experts are warning applicants to be extra careful, noting that the KUCCPS application system is strict and unforgiving. A small mistake can lead to automatic disqualification, even for students who meet the academic requirements.

Below are the most common reasons KMTC applications are rejected and what students can still do to fix them before the portal closes.

1. The “Basket” Mistake That Costs Thousands of Applicants

Many applicants select their preferred courses, add them to the “Course Basket” on the KUCCPS portal, and log out believing the application is complete.

In reality, the basket functions like a shopping cart. Until an applicant clicks “Submit Application” and enters the required payment code, the system does not register the application.

Education officials advise applicants to log back into the portal and confirm that their dashboard clearly reads “Application Submitted.” If courses are still in the basket, the application is incomplete and must be finalized immediately.

2. Ignoring Subject Requirements, Not Just Mean Grade

A common misconception among applicants is that meeting the overall mean grade is enough. However, competitive courses such as Nursing and Clinical Medicine rely heavily on cluster subjects.

An applicant with a C (Plain) or even a B may still be disqualified if they scored poorly in critical subjects such as Biology, Mathematics, or Chemistry. The KUCCPS system automatically filters candidates based on subject performance.

Applicants are advised to check the “Available Programmes” section on the portal and only select courses where the system confirms eligibility, including alternative programmes such as Health Records, Nutrition, or Community Health.

3. Putting All Choices in One Course

Some applicants list the same course often Nursing across all four choices, hoping to increase their chances.

Experts warn that this strategy backfires. Missing the cut-off point by even a fraction means losing all four choices at once, leaving the applicant without any placement.

To reduce risk, applicants are encouraged to diversify their choices by selecting a dream course, a closely related option, and at least two “safe” courses where they comfortably meet the requirements.

4. Using Inactive or Wrong Contact Details

Another overlooked issue is outdated contact information. Many applicants use phone numbers that are inactive, lost, or belong to relatives.

Initial admission notifications are often sent via SMS. If KUCCPS or KMTC cannot reach an applicant, they may miss crucial reporting deadlines.

Applicants should update their contact details under the “Settings” section of the portal and ensure the listed phone number is active and accessible.

5. Falling for Payment Scams

As application deadlines near, scammers take advantage of anxious students by circulating fake posters and messages asking for payments through personal M-Pesa numbers.

KUCCPS has repeatedly clarified that all KMTC applications must be completed strictly through the official portal. Payments should only be made using the KSh 1,500 eCitizen payment instructions displayed on the system.

Any money sent to unofficial numbers is lost, and the application will not be registered.

What Applicants Should Do Before January 27

Before the portal closes, applicants are urged to:

  • Log in to students.kuccps.net
  • Confirm their application status reads “Submitted”
  • Verify subject eligibility for all four course choices
  • Ensure payment reflects correctly on the portal
  • Submit early to avoid last-day system congestion

With only days left to the deadline, education stakeholders are urging students to act fast, double-check their applications, and avoid simple mistakes that could cost them a place in one of the country’s most competitive training institutions.
