Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has emerged as the most preferred successor to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, according to a new opinion poll released by research firm Infotrak.

The survey, published on Sunday, December 28, 2025, offers fresh insight into public opinion on the future leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at a time when succession debates are quietly gaining momentum within the party.

The study was conducted using computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI), sampling 1,000 adult respondents drawn from all 47 counties and Kenya’s eight regions.

Participants were asked to identify the individual they believe is best placed to take over from Raila Odinga as the party’s political standard-bearer.

According to the findings, 33 per cent of respondents named Babu Owino as their preferred choice — a significant lead over other contenders.

The results are notable given that Owino has on several occasions taken positions that diverge from official ODM party lines, including his public opposition to the broad-based government arrangement.

Despite this, respondents cited his high visibility, outspoken political style, and strong appeal among younger voters as key factors behind his popularity.

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, who currently serves as ODM party leader, placed second with 10 per cent support. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga followed with 7 per cent, while Siaya Governor James Orengo garnered 4 per cent.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo each received 2 per cent support. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga each attracted 1 per cent.
