A new bill is under consideration in the National Assembly that will compel foreign companies operating in Kenya to source their products locally and hire mainly Kenyans, including in top positions.
The Local Content Bill, 2025, sponsored by Laikipia County Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, seeks to establish a legal framework and tighten regulations on the participation of foreign companies in the advancement of Kenya’s economy.
If passed, the law will force foreign companies to buy at least 60% of their goods from Kenya and ensure that 80% of their workforce consists of Kenyans.
This, Kagiri explains, will spur manufacturing, uplift the agricultural sector, support local businesses and farmers and create more employment opportunities for Kenyans, especially the young people.
